The East Is Red, also known as Swordsman III, is a 1993 Hong Kong wuxia film. The main character in the film is loosely based on Dongfang Bubai, a character in Louis Cha's novel.

Following Dongfang Bubai's apparent death in Swordsman II, the jianghu (martial artists' community) disintegrates into chaos as it lacks a dominant figure to serve as a de facto leader. Several imposters use Dongfang Bubai's name to rally supporters, form their own sects, and fight for power.

The Swordsman II (1992)

What is a hero? That's the question at the heart of the Tsui Hark-produced film Swordsman II, a free adaptation of the Jin Yong novel Xiao Ao Jiang Hu and the second part of an epic film trilogy that would revitalize the wuxia genre, as well as inspire loads of imitators. Set in the Ming Dynasty, the film continues the tale of Ling Wu Chung (Jet Li) and his tomboy sidekick Kiddo (Michelle Reis). The two comrades have decided to retire from the martial world along with their Wah Mountain brothers. However, Ling still has feelings for Highlander Ying (Rosamund Kwan) whose father has been imprisoned by the enigmatic Asia the Invincible (Brigitte Lin), the possessor of the magical Sacred Scroll. And if Ling's girl troubles weren't enough, he ends up falling for the elegant Asia! One problem: Asia the Invincible is really a man! With Ching Siu Tung at the helm, Swordsman II emerges as the most acclaimed film of the series. And even more intriguing, the filmmakers show a willingness to go places that a traditional action film wouldn't even dare. Unlike most popcorn flicks, Swordsman II will resonate with the audience long after it's over!

The East is Red (1993)

The third in the Swordsman series, The East Is Red brings back the legendary villain from Swordsman II, Asia the Invincible (Brigitte Lin)! Presumed dead to the world of Martial Arts, Asia the Invincible makes a stunning return when numerous factions make a play for the mystical scroll that grants her unlimited power. Officer Koo (Yu Rong Guang) informs Asia that in her absence, others have taken on her name and are using it to achieve their own ends. Among the pretenders is Snow (Joey Wang), a former lover of Asia's. Koo persuades Asia to return to rightfully claim her name, but Asia's return to power spins wildly out of control. Her rage consumes her, and soon the world of Martial Arts will be bathed in the blood of her foes. Director Ching Siu Tung creates wildly imaginative and over-the-top action sequences sure to please fans of the previous Swordsman films. Fantastic wirework and the grand theatrics of Brigitte Lin make The East is Red an entertaining, colorful spectacle that dazzles with its sheer energy and cinematic panache. The East is Red is a creative motion picture that perfectly exemplifies the delirious joys of this unique Hong Kong cinema genre!
